Birdcalls is a video-conferencing platform that prioritizes digital security and privacy for their professional users. Using military-grade encryption, they offer unique tools such as call time limits, screenshot blocking, single-call links, and end-to-end encryption. The brand voice is nostalgic for a time before mass-surveillance and superheroes changing in phone booths.

Birdcalls

I co-founded this company with a friend during the pandemic, our goal was to meet the needs of professionals who were suddenly forced to work in a digital landscape. We recognized the need for elegant, effective technology that protected the privacy of our clients with military-grade encryption, while still remaining approachable and gracefully designed.

I focused on social media management, web design, and writing our front-end copy and technical blog, as well as working on UX research and design for our app. I prioritized simplicity, and balancing the needs of our non-technical users with the curiosity of those who were veterans in the space.

Cornerstone Features

The App

While the technical aspects ran smoothly on our app, we realized that the onboarding process for new users to register, to create a call, or to join an already-existing call were clunky and difficult to learn. I used Figma and extensive user testing and review to create a UX roadmap of suggestions for our technical team to implement, that perfectly balanced design, form, and function.

This allowed non-technical users who were hesitant about using a new service/platform to register easily and quickly, with new users able to create an account and schedule a new call in under five minutes from downloading the app. Its sleek design and single-flow interface created a feeling of assistive conversation with the user rather than a repetitive task.
